My Sports

The sports I like now are so different from the sports I followed as a kid. Growing up, all I cared about was hockey highlights. I’d watch Sports Desk first thing every morning to see what happened in the NHL the night prior. Baseball was a very distant second, and as always, football didn’t even register.

Things are different now. I find myself not really interested in hockey at all. Baseball is probably now my favourite sport. Not only that, but I can distinctly remember my Dad watching golf when I was a kid and wondering how he could possibly put up with such boring minutia. Now, I look forward to The Masters 6 months before it airs. I enjoy the US Open, Ryder Cup, and Canadian Open. I can sit in front of the TV all day watching golf.

What’s changed? A number of things I suppose, but I’m not going to spend too much energy mulling it over. It is what it is.

  1. I’ve changed my habits a lot too, but in a slightly different way. I still enjoy and follow sports but it’s rare for me to watch a game of anything on TV – unless it’s football.

I know that sounds weird coming from me, but let me explain.

Hockey was and is my #1 sport but I don’t watch it very often at all. I know it sounds weird but I only care about the Leafs. I grew up with Toronto and cheered for them day in and day out. I know that it’s far better to watch hockey that doesn’t involve the Leafs (these days anyway) but I’m not the type to sit down and watch something Pittsburgh vs New York Rangers. I know the hockey is amazing but I couldn’t care less about other teams in the league. It also pisses me off when I see crowds and scrums gather over some guy getting body checked but that’s another topic entirely.

Golf was enjoyable for me a few years ago but I never watch it anymore. It bores me to death. Nothing has changed really, I’ve just lost interest. I guess you could say the same for baseball. I love the sport but I couldn’t tell you the last time I watched 2 innings on television. I love the playoffs but who doesn’t!

Basketball is just….well, never been a real big fan of the game.

Football has breathed some life back into sports for me though. It’s something I never followed as a kid so it’s new to me and I’m still learning. I used to think that football was the most pointless and simple game out there. I’ve since realized that there is more to football than meets the eye. MUCH MORE.
